"Living God's Grace and Sharing the Faith!" The Mother Church of the Grand Canyon Synod, of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, founded in 1914, has given birth to five other Lutheran congregations in Phoenix over the years. We seek to live out our Christian faith through the practice of the classical Christian spiritual disciplines of worship, study, stewardship, service, fellowship, and witness. Housed in the only example of Gothic architecture in the State of Arizona, our recently remodeled sanctuary, with its world famous stained glass windows and newly renovated pipe organ, dates from 1928. "The Pancake Church," is located across the street from Margaret T. Hance Park. Every Sunday morning at 7:30am, we serve a pancake breakfast to an average of 250 guests each week. Reaching out to primarily single male members of Phoenix's homeless population, our goal is to invite them into the deeper fellowship of our congregation. We continue this outreach ministry through the week with the Monday Morning Grace Room, Wednesday Evening G.L.O. W., and Saturday Morning Men's Bible Study. WE'RE IN THE CITY FOR GOOD! We like to say that "We are not the `Religious Right, 'and we are not `Left Behind, 'we're in the city for good! " We believe that our welfare as a congregation is tied to the welfare of our fair city, and we love downtown Phoenix! Practicing what we preach, we seek the welfare of the city through our involvement in public and political life. In the spirit of Christian hospitality, we open our facility to a number of "outside" groups, including AA, the Progressive Democratic Caucus, Girl Scouts, the Community Arts Center, Valley Interfaith Project, and Arizona Interfaith Network, to name a few. Breaking The Cycle Community Health Care, a clinic sponsored by the Arizona State School of Nursing is located in our facility. Breaking the Cycle's mission statement is to: "To provide comprehensive, accessible, culturally acceptable outreach health care to the under served populations in central Phoenix, educational experiences for undergraduate students, and opportunities for faculty practice and research in our Academic Nursing Center." They are a valuable partner in ministry, serving the health care needs of a population that typically "slips through the cracks." Dealing as it does with reproductive health and family planning, Breaking the Cycle is the only clinic of its kind housed in a church anywhere in the United States! "Everyone Has A Need, Everyone Has A Gift!" Grace Lutheran Church is an open and affirming community of faith, actively pursuing the sort of multi-cultural vision encouraged by the New Testament. More than just a slogan, everyone is welcome at Grace, regardless of race, creed, economic status, sexual orientation, or social position.
